The goal
To help us all do something positive about global warming.
To cut CO2 emissions and at the same time cut domestic fuel costs.
The background
Using electricity during the peak times of 4-8pm typically uses lots of highly polluting energy sources such as gas and coal, to meet peak demand.
The hours of 4pm to 8pm are typically the most expensive hours in which to consume electricity due to the high demand.
By varying consumption between 4-8pm to reflect the availability of wind power, we can
• cut our fuel bills
• reduce CO2 emissions
• keep the lights on. Wind power is unreliable and so a near equal amount of back up plant is kept on standby just in case the wind doesn’t blow. The amount of back up plant that we build is scaled by how much we use during the peak months of the year typically between the hours of 4-8pm
The way to do this
Consumption can be varied by:
• anticipating the availability of wind power and, if necessary, charging phones, laptops, EVs overnight
• conserving consumption between 4-8pm by turning things down or switching them off
• delaying consumption until after 8pm.
If wind power is available in Abundance then this energy will automatically displace the highly polluting, inefficient and high cost generating stations.
